Schaffner Introduces new LCL filter for Energy Regeneration

Source: Schaffner news

LCL filter are essential to connect AFE (active front end) drives and AIC (active infeed converter) ot the grid. With the increasing need for saving electrical energy more often AFE/AIC’s are applied for energy regeneration reasons. Regaining energy during AC motor cost to rest or braking avoids wasting energy in the motor or the braking resistance. In addition, LCL filter are also required to enable DC-AC converter feeding the elctrical energy back to the grid.

Schaffner, the international leader in the fields of electromagnetic compatibility and power quality, introduces a standard LCL filter FN 6840 range. They are ready to be installed and connected as one unit, since all the necessary LCL components are mounted in one preassembled package. The FN 6840 design allows various configurations with the same platform to also fulfil specific regeneration application needs.

With a proper match of the LCL filter to the AFE/AIC and the grid, the FN 6840 LCL filter can limit the ripple current generated by the AFE/AIC to a level <5% and does help to reduce voltage distortions and improves the power quality.

The new compact 3 phase LCL filter FN 6840 series is available with 5 current ratings from 25 to 380A for 480 VAC. Depending on AFE/AIC versions, the LCL filter can be selected with or without passiv damping function.

Typical examples of AFE regenerative motor applications are: elevator, hoists and cranes or any similar transportation system, machine tools and machines with frequent breaking cycles, centrifuges and special machines with high inertias, flywheels, winder/unwinder, press feeders and test stands.
