Skeleton Technologies has been chosen by Rail.S, one of the largest rail technology clusters in Germany, as one of the three winners of the SET4FUTURE Innovation Awards 2021. Rail.S was looking for innovative products and solutions that are a showcase for rail technology of the future and the jury was particularly impressed by Skeleton’s SkelMod 51V rail-certified module.
Rail.S cluster manager Dirk-Ulrich Krüger explains: “Sustainability and digitalization were the themes of this year’s competition, and they reflect the future agenda of the rail industry. This is no coincidence because many companies and research institutions in the state of Saxony are helping to shape the mobility of tomorrow day after day, but often in secret. With the SET4FUTURE Innovation Award, we give these hidden champions the stage they deserve.”
“I am particularly pleased that Skeleton Technologies from Upper Lusatia has prevailed with its innovative, green, and sustainable idea”, underlines juror and member of Rail.S advisory board, Michael Fohrer. “These rail-certified ultracapacitors, which allow up to 30 percent energy savings with a lifetime of over ten years are convincing economic and ecological arguments on the way to emission-free cities in Germany.”
Trusted by companies such as Škoda Transportation in Mannheim and Medcom in Warsaw, the SkelMod 51V module has enabled significant energy savings of up to 30% in trams with kinetic energy recovery (KERS), an application where braking energy is harnessed by the ultracapacitor module bank, and used for acceleration. In addition, the ultracapacitor modules shave high peak of power, protecting city infrastructure.
As explained by Rail.S, with this world’s only ultracapacitor storage system fully certified for rail, Skeleton Technologies has developed a unique product that sets new standards in terms of green mobility and has the potential to establish itself as a standard solution on the market.
The other winners of the SET4FUTURE Innovation Awards 2021 include the Fraunhofer Institut für Keramische Systeme und Technologien IKTS, Vossloh Rail Services and WOLFRAM Designer und Ingenieure, as well as INAVET.
The winners have automatically qualified for the European ERCI Innovation Award competition. The ceremony is planned as part of the SIFER 2021 trade fair on October 26th, 2021 in Lille (France).
