Hyundai Mobis develops he world’s first nickel-free inductor material and also to commercialize a low nickel-content inductor material.
Hyundai Mobis Co. has created the world’s first nickel-free inductor material, anticipated to significantly reduce the cost of inductor manufacturing, according to the South Korean automotive parts manufacturer’s announcement.
The Hyundai Motor Group affiliate is currently performing verification tests on this novel material, which substitutes nickel with silicon. Inductors, essential components in automobile power transformers, are traditionally composed of an iron-nickel alloy powder.
The steep increase in nickel prices has been cited as a factor for escalating manufacturing costs of vehicle components, especially since nickel has become a crucial component of electric vehicle batteries. In the last decade, the price of nickel has increased approximately sixfold.
Additionally, Hyundai Mobis has developed an inductor material with a reduced nickel content of 30%, a decrease from the former 50%. This new material is on track for commercial production, as revealed in the company’s presentation outlining its strategy for the development of auto parts materials.
The firm is transitioning to innovative and sustainable materials in alignment with international objectives to combat climate change.
