DigiKey has introduced a new three-part video series, Engineering Unlocked, focused on how today’s tools, communities and education initiatives are transforming the way electronic systems are conceived, prototyped and brought to market.

Centered on real-world engineering workflows, the series showcases how innovators leverage modern hardware platforms, open collaboration and STEM programs to accelerate design cycles from concept to working prototypes.

Focus on tools, communities and STEM

Engineering Unlocked looks at the intersection of rapid prototyping, open engineering communities and hands-on learning that is reshaping electronics design. Featuring voices from industry experts, educators and makers, the series examines how engineers combine advanced development hardware, accessible software and community knowledge to reduce time-to-prototype and move quickly from ideas to validated designs.

Sponsored by Microchip and Molex, the series highlights not only the enabling technologies and components behind modern projects, but also the ecosystems that support them. From community events to makerspaces and academic initiatives, Engineering Unlocked follows how students, hobbyists and professionals alike are gaining access to the tools and mentorship needed to build practical engineering skills.

Episode Highlights

Episode 1 – A community of innovators: Lessons from Supercon

The first episode takes viewers inside the Supercon 2025 event, where engineers, makers and hardware hackers gather to share projects, techniques and design approaches. It captures how community-driven collaboration, open exchange of ideas and rapid prototyping on-site help participants learn faster and iterate more boldly on new concepts. The episode underscores how such grassroots communities contribute to broader industry innovation by lowering barriers to experimentation.

Episode 2 – Tools of the trade: The modern hardware toolkit

The second episode focuses on the hardware and workflows that form today’s engineering “toolbox.” Industry contributors discuss how development boards, reference designs, modular components and flexible test setups reduce friction in early-stage design. The episode also touches on best practices for building a streamlined hardware workflow, from initial concept through prototyping and validation, showing how the right toolkit can compress design timelines and improve overall design quality.

Episode 3 – The path forward: STEM and the future of engineering

The final episode looks ahead to the next generation of engineers by spotlighting STEM initiatives, makerspaces and educational programs that give students early exposure to electronics. It follows how hands-on lab work, project-based curricula and access to modern hardware platforms help bridge the gap between theory and practice. By connecting classroom learning to real-world design challenges, these programs aim to build a strong foundation for tomorrow’s engineering workforce.

How to Watch Engineering Unlocked

All three episodes of Engineering Unlocked are available to stream through DigiKey’s Engineering Unlocked content hub on the DigiKey website. Viewers can watch the complete series at their own pace, using it as inspiration for personal projects, classroom discussions or professional development. The series adds to DigiKey’s growing library of video and written resources created to support engineers, designers, builders and procurement professionals across the full product lifecycle.
