Skeleton Technologies opens SuperBattery factory in Finland providing one Gigawatt of AI power.

Skeleton Technologies, Europe’s leading manufacturer of high-power energy storage solutions including supercapacitors and hybrid batteries, announced the official opening of its SuperBattery factory in Varkaus, Finland, and total investment of 50 million euros in the factory.

Skeleton is Opening a New Research and Development Center in Finland

The new facility is Europe’s first site producing high-power batteries for AI data centers, and the first globally to industrialize backup power systems for mission-critical computing and emerging sectors such as nuclear fusion.

The Varkaus SuperBattery factory represents a major milestone for Europe’s energy resilience and technological sovereignty. By localizing advanced battery production in Finland, Skeleton strengthens European manufacturing independence, supports the growth of AI infrastructure, mobility, and grid stability, and reduces reliance on global supply chains.

“AI, mobility, and the grid of the future all require extreme power, reliability, and sustainability,” said Taavi Madiberk, CEO and co-founder of Skeleton Technologies. “Our Varkaus factory is a cornerstone for sovereign European AI infrastructure. Elon Musk has said batteries are key for training AI models and he is right. We need to push the performance globally while ensuring that the digital revolution is powered responsibly and independently.”

The factory site was originally owned by European Batteries Oy, a pioneer of Europe’s battery industry and the first company to produce Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries in Europe. By bringing this site back to life, Skeleton’s investment revives the battery ecosystem in Varkaus, giving new purpose to one of Finland’s historic centers of battery innovation.

“I have been following Skeleton Technologies since its creation in 2009. Their technical expertise is outstanding, and the opening of the new Varkaus factory represents a major boost for Finland’s innovative battery value chain. It is also very positive news for the economy of Eastern Finland,” says Lassi Noponen, Director General of Business Finland.

Skeleton’s SuperBattery technology is powered by CBMM’s NBXCELER™ niobium oxides, developed in partnership with CBMM, the global leader in the production and commercialization of niobium products. Niobium-based materials enhance battery safety, performance, and lifetime, enabling faster charging, longer durability, and greater reliability for demanding AI and industrial applications.

“Niobium plays a key role in shaping a more sustainable future,” said Ricardo Lima, CEO of CBMM. “Our partnership with Skeleton demonstrates how Niobium can make AI infrastructure safer, longer lasting, and more efficient.”

Skeleton currently employs more than 65 people in Finland and in Varkaus alone, will grow to over 200 employees by the end of 2029, reinforcing Finland’s leadership in advanced manufacturing and clean technologies. Varkaus SuperBattery factory produces one gigawatt of battery power for AI data centers, grid stability, mobility, and defense.

“Varkaus is now home to the first AI data center battery factory in Europe,” added Madiberk. “It symbolizes the fusion of European deep-tech innovation, Finnish industrial heritage, and advanced materials expertise from global leaders like CBMM.”
