binder Releases Tool‑Tightenable M12 Connectors for Improved Reliability

Compact, robust, and standardized connection solutions are crucial in automation technology, industrial communication, and drive technology. Panel mount connectors, in particular, must be adaptable to a wide range of requirements.

Product Manager Ron Hautzinger explains, “With our M12 panel mount portfolio, we offer a suitable solution for almost every automation application – from power supply and industrial data communication to sensor integration. Our customers benefit not only from the variety but also from the consistent quality and the ability to obtain system solutions such as pre-assembled cables or PCB assembly from a single source.”

Universally applicable – precisely configurable

M12 panel mount connectors from Binder are used in various applications where signals, data, or power need to be safely integrated into devices or housing. These connectors are commonly found in manufacturing and automation technology, control cabinets, sensors, drives, and railway and building technology.

Panel mount solutions are particularly suitable for robotics applications, such as connecting sensors on joints, automated guided vehicles, conveyor systems, logistics systems, and agricultural machinery operating in harsh environmental conditions. For instance, they can be used for decentralized control of lighting, air conditioning, and access systems in agricultural machinery.

The versatility of M12 panel mount connectors lies in their ability to accommodate different codings (A, B, D, K, L, S, T, and X), protocols, and requirements. For example, A-coded variants are suitable for CAN bus and IO-Link applications, while B-coded variants are ideal for Profibus applications. D- and X-coded panel mounts have been specifically designed for Industrial Ethernet protocols like PROFINET. K- and S-coded variants are predestined for AC applications up to 630 V AC, while L- and T-coded solutions are suitable for DC applications up to 63 V DC.

Beyond their standard versions, M12 panel mount connectors offer various connection types, including stranded wires, soldering, THT technology, THR, and SMT, which enable fully automated PCB assembly. The connectors are available in different materials, such as stainless steel, plastic, and metal, providing design flexibility. Additionally, they can be protected up to IP69K, ensuring their durability in various environments.

Practical requirements – solutions from binder

Customers often prioritize requirements like high protection levels, vibration resistance, space-saving designs, or EMC protection. Ron Hautzinger explains that their panel mount solutions specifically address these points. They offer compact designs for tight installation spaces and shielding concepts for interference-free data transmission. Additionally, screw mounting allows for easy integration into front panels or housings.

Challenges in product development and production

Developing customized panel mount parts for the industry presents a multitude of challenges. On the customer side, the primary focus is on ensuring robustness, tightness, simple assembly, and reliable coding. Binder addresses these requirements through its modular designs, durable materials, and ingenious assembly systems.

Internal product development also faces technical challenges, such as efficient heat dissipation, compact integration within limited installation space, and optimized shielding to comply with EMC specifications. These aspects are continuously integrated into the further development of the portfolio to meet future technological and normative requirements.

System solutions from a single source – under the umbrella of binder solutions

‘‘A clear trend is the demand for complete solutions,’ emphasises Ron Hautzinger. ‘binder therefore offers complete system solutions in addition to the panel mount connectors: from the PCB to the panel mount module to customised cable assembly.’ This modular approach reduces interfaces, simplifies assembly and increases operational reliability. This integrative system approach is bundled and further developed under the name binder solutions.

Technical data:

The technical data varies depending on the series, but all products offer reliable and secure connections:

  • Type: plug or socket
  • Design: straight or angled
  • Coding: A, B, D, K, L, S, T and X
  • Number of pins: 2 to 12, depending on coding
  • Protection class: up to IP69K
  • Material: Stainless steel, plastic or metal
  • Connection types: stranded wire, solder, THR, SMT, screw terminal or THT
