DigiKey Invests $100 Million to Expand Distribution Capacity

DigiKey product distribution center in Thief River Falls, Minnesota

DigiKey has announced a $100 million investment over the next 18 months to expand its product distribution center in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, and upgrade its order management system.

The program will add picking capacity, automated order retrieval and packing capabilities to support growing demand while maintaining the distributor’s same-day fulfillment model.

DigiKey Releases Season Two of Sustainable Futures Series

Announced on October 14, 2026, the investment builds on the infrastructure DigiKey opened in August 2022. For component buyers, the central issue is fulfillment capacity: ensuring that increasing order volumes do not become a bottleneck between available inventory and shipment.

More Picking Capacity and Automated Packing

The investment funds the next phases of DigiKey’s distribution center expansion, with work focused on:

  • Additional high-volume picking capacity and new picking bays.
  • Order retrieval automation.
  • Advanced automated packing, including a phased rollout of multiple packing lines.
  • Expansion of the order management system alongside physical fulfillment operations.

The first new automated packing system is already on site and is scheduled to enter service during 2026. Additional packing automation will follow during the investment program.

The upgrades are intended to process a growing share of orders across multiple product form factors with greater speed and efficiency. DigiKey has not disclosed a new daily shipment capacity, a detailed commissioning schedule or the allocation of investment between warehouse equipment and order management systems.

Building on the Distribution Center Opened in 2022

DigiKey’s 2.2 million-square-foot distribution center expansion opened in August 2022 with room for further growth. The original design deliberately left open areas, including much of the fourth floor, available for future equipment and operational expansion.

The new program therefore extends an existing scalable facility rather than announcing a separate distribution center. It follows the approach described in the earlier Digi-Key distribution center expansion, which combined additional warehouse space with extensive logistics automation.

“Our customers choose DigiKey because they know we’re fast and they know we’ll be fast tomorrow,” said DigiKey CEO Dave Doherty. “A $100 million commitment says exactly that: we’re expanding capacity and automating where it counts to keep same-day fulfillment the standard, not the exception.”

Investment Follows Strong Company Growth

DigiKey says it is on pace to grow by more than 50% in 2026 and projects continued double-digit growth in the following year. These figures are company expectations rather than completed full-year results.

The distributor reports serving more than one million customers annually, with more than 1.9 million products in stock and ready for same-day shipment. Its broader offering includes more than 17.4 million components from over 3,000 manufacturers.

The distinction matters for procurement: the total catalog describes the breadth of the offering, whereas the in-stock figure describes products positioned for immediate fulfillment.

What the Expansion Means for Component Buyers

For engineers and purchasing teams sourcing passive components and other electronic parts, the investment primarily addresses the handling of available inventory. More picking and packing capacity is intended to help DigiKey sustain its shipment service as order volumes increase.

However, distribution capacity and component availability are different constraints. The announcement does not establish shorter manufacturer lead times, lower component prices or increased stock levels for particular capacitor, resistor or inductor families.

Same-day fulfillment also refers to order processing and shipment, not same-day delivery to the customer. The practical benefit targeted by this program is maintaining the speed of warehouse operations as DigiKey’s business scales.
